HISTORY OF AROMATHERAPY

The origins of aromatherapy can be traced through the religious, medical and social practices of all the major civilizations in man’s history. Marguerite Maury pioneered the application of aromatherapy to beauty therapy and health care in her book “The Secret of Life and Youth”. She also developed the method of applying the oils through massage.

WHAT IS AROMATHERAPY?

Aromatherapy is one of the natural therapies. It is the use of organic essences of aromatic plants for healing and maintenance of vitality. In the UK, it is a holistic approach to encourage health in all levels.

"The use of pure essential oils to seek to influence, to change or modify, mind, body, spirit; physiology or mood." (Jan Kusmirek)

ESSENTIAL OILS

WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?

Essential oils are found in herbs, plants, flowers, petals, leaves, grass, berries, fruits, seeds, branches, stems, barks, woods, roots, gums or resins. Through the work of enzymes and sunlight, the power of plants are produced and held in tiny sacs somewhere on the living plant. They do not dissolve in water but evaporate instantly when exposed to the air. The essential oil constituents are mainly hydrocarbons and oxygenated compounds, which are derived from hydrocarbons such as alcohols, aldehydes, esters, ethers, ketones, phenols and oxides.

As the molecules of essential oils are so small, they can penetrate into the human blood stream through the nose and the skin. With powerful chemical constituents and pleasing aromas, essential oils help to enhance both physical and psychological well-being at the same time.

METHOD OF EXTRACTION

  1. Expression
  2. Distillation
  3. Solvent extraction

CRITERIA OF GOOD ESSENTIAL OILS

  1. The packaging should show the followings:
  2. Essential oils should be stored in dark glass bottles with integral droppers.
  3. Quality of essential oils cannot be easily determined. The safest way is to buy from reputable suppliers.
